I was at a funeral a few weeks ago for a 49-year-old man who had died of a heart at-tack. He was married and a father of a 7-year-old son and two step children. I spoke to his wife and she shared with me that she was feeling overwhelmed and worried about running the family business. It was a very vulnerable moment and my thought was that she didn’t feel safe in her world. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I know that when we go through challenging transitions there will be times when you do not feel safe. This was one of those times.
Not feeling safe can occur at many stages of one’s life. Many new parents don’t feel safe, often they don’t feel supported or even realize that they are not supported. They have a lot of stress and don’t feel safe and may wonder:
– How will I care for my baby?
– How do I handle the overwhelm I am feeling?
– How do I create financial stability?
For someone at the end of their life, their family and people who are grieving, this is a very raw and vulnerable time. They don’t feel safe and they can wonder:
– How will I go on without my loved one?
– Will I be financially stable?
– Can I manage the home on my own or do I even want to?
Survival and safety are our basic needs and they are the foundation of our stability. If these needs are not met then we are not able to enjoy life. As I always tell others, “we are much more than this physical body, we are made up of energy and have other bodies.”
We have an etheric body and this is where our chakras are located. We have 7 major chakras and today I am talking about our Root Chakra. This chakra is located at the base of the spine and is about safety, survival, food, shelter, and finances. It supports our physical body and connects us with the earth. It is the root of our life force.
When people don’t feel safe this chakra is affected. It gets sluggish and stagnant and this affects everything in the body. People may feel fear and isolate themselves, all in the hope of feeling safe.
There are ways to feel safe and it’s important to know what makes you feel safe. We are unique beings and what works for someone may not work for you.
Below are some ways to feel safe and secure:
– Be present with yourself
– Ask for support, people do not know what you need
– Eat nutritious food – especially root vegetables (they connect you with the earth)
– Drink lots of water
– Get lots of sleep
– Move your body
– Listen to relaxing music
– Remember it’s ok to say no
– A hug goes a long way
Feeling Safe Exploration
– 6 drops of orange essential oil
– Music that you love and makes you feel happy
Place 6 drops of orange essential oil in a diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser you can add 1 drop of orange essential oil to a Q-tip, or tissue. Allow yourself to relax and listen to the music while smelling the orange oil. Keep focusing on your breath, the scent, and music. When you are ready ask yourself the following questions:
How am I feeling right now?
Where is the feeling located in my body?
Can I let this go?
Do I feel safe?
Sit quietly and you will receive answers to your questions. Continue to relax focusing on your breath, the orange scent, and the music. Allow yourself to rest in the moment experiencing whatever is coming up. Try to observe what you are feeling without judgement. Just be with everything even if it is uncomfortable – it will pass if you relax. Keep exploring what does safe feel like? Notice how it feels, notice how you feel! Keep linking the feeling of safe with the orange scent and music.
When you feel complete move your hands and feet and open your eyes. If you want to write down your experience, journaling is an excellent way to explore what you are thinking and feeling. It helps to gain clarity on issues, see where you are blocked, and to see your progress.
This exploration can be repeated every day and only takes a few minutes. The more you invest in yourself the more peace, happiness and balance you will experience.
